Hey there.

I have another post trying to decide on what the first drone I get should be. I apologize for positing twice but I sorta felt like this was different topic but still falls under this category.

In learning more about what drone is for me, I realize I don't understand how the drones work that use your phone as the "eyes" of the drone. Does it use your data? I'm particularly interested because I'd be curious what would be involved with using it overseas. (i.e. will it not work if I don't have a data plan for overseas)

I'd appreciate any explanation on how that works.

Yes, it's just a wifi connection in conjunction with an app on your iphone, has nothing to do with your data plan as you're not "online"
 
Adding that you shouldn't expect a lot out of the FPV (first person view) transmitted to a cell phone. The range is not great, nor is the quality.
