KK2.1 + Turnigy 9x Nightmare

I am new to RC and have built a quadcopter using a x650f, 30a Plush escs, NM 800kv motors, fat shark pred v2 and 300mah batteries.

I have built the quad having done hours and hours of research and am convinced it is built and wired correctly.

Whenever I hold buttons 1 and 4 on the KK2.1, plug in and push the throttle up it doesn't calibrate the quad and I can't arm it to sort out the motors.

I have spent the last few hours banging my head against a brick wall trying to work it out. I have watch video after video and page after page to no avail.

I am using a converted (Mode 1 to 2) Turnigy 9x with the throttle reversed.

Like I said I am a RC virgin and its probably something silly I am not doing right.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Sam when you do esc calibration, you must have transmitter on first and full throttle, then hold button 1 and 4 down keep them pressed, and plug in battery if you can help that will be good, keep buttons down till you hear a tone then put throttle to zero and wait for tone again then release buttons dont release buttons till tone from motor and you have zero throttle, if you go into monitor mode on kk2.1 and make sure all sticks are moving the right way if not change it so they do
 
Thats how I am doing it.

I have tried plugging the escs directly into the receiver and still no joy. Its got to be the 9x, I tried with an RX620 receiver and still no joy.
 
HI Sam did you look at monitor on kk2.1 led screen to make sure throttle is working right ,if it is plug esc in to motor one pins of kk and do calibration one at a time plugging each esc in to motor one pins on kk, the 9x does have some problems , shame you cant get a different transmitter like the orange one for hk for $99......£42, it is as good as the spektrum dx6i but much cheaper , it does sound like transmitter if you can get esc to calibrate or board to arm , the manual also said check throttle channel may need to be reversed
Sam in the first post you made you said that you held buttons 1 and 4 then pushed throttle to full this will not work , sorry dont mean to be hard on you but , you must turn on trans and put throttle to full first then hold buttons down then plug in battery this forces esc in to calibration mode , do it this way and try one at a time if it wont do all 4 at same time , we will get it sorted mate it harder when i cant get my hands on it
 
I have done everything imaginable. I have just ordered a servo, servo testing unit, watt meter and battery pack for testing.

I originally wanted the Orange 6 channel but got talked into getting the 9x (even got orange props to match). I am contemplating getting an orange as well so I can buddy when the 9x is working. In all fairness won't need a 9 channel for now (5 should to it). I am in the UK so they are loads more expensive. Ordering from the states is expensive too. Postage and customs duties are a killer.
 
Hi Sam the radio is a key part on e bay there are 3 dx6i all new all uk dealer £80-£85 i would look at one i have one and fly loads of quads helis etc on it never had a problem,
another thing is you can run the phoenix flight sim from this transmitter and the flight sim is the best on the market, it has quads on it too as a newbie you need to get loads of stick time , and if you crash it wont cost and you will crash we all do the phoenix on e bay from a good dealer in birmingham at £50 with lead and thats the new version,
i am a bit worried that your spending all this money out and putting together is really nice kit but can you fly, quads are like a cp heli ypu need to know how to balance it even more when you turn you will need to use all flight controls all at the same time to balance it , they can get away from you very fast, and FPV is the worse for loosing orientation and having a big crash

Thanks for showing me the links for the dx6i. Some people on the RC Groups forum are saying that the KK2.1 has compatibility issues with the Turnigy 9x.

I really like the look of the OrangeRx T-SIX 2.4GHz DSM2 6CH. RC Geeks are doing it for £69

I have a tough decision to make. I can afford to get another radio this week but I really am thinking about ditching the kk2.1 and going with a NAZA M Lite with the GPS which I can afford to order next week. It will be a while before I get more cash for the project. I really should have got it up and running before buying the Fat Sharks.
 
Hi Sam i hope your not going to be wearing that star trooper when flying , the naza is top notch mate i have never had one , but all my friends have them and work well a bit harder to set up the kk is so easy to use , the orange is a good price , the FPV unit under the quad , your have to move it get it up top mate if you come down hard it will trash it , you spent money on it to make a good set up so wait a bit and get the better systems , its like having a aston martin and putting a mini engine in it , looks the part but dont work as well as it can
i am not nit picking Sam but try and reduce the zip ties it all adds weight mate just have 2 on the wire just before and after the esc , while your waiting on parts are the escs simonk flashed if not i would flash them it will make the quad loads more stable watch this video will show you why you can do them your self your need flash tool and software is free,
 
Just popped out to the local hardware store for more cable ties, managed to get some black and yellow ones. Looks loads better. :)

I removed the Fat shark and will work out where to put it up top once I work out how to mount the KK2.1. The mount plate screw alignment is slightly off on the top plate of my x650f frame so I need to find an inventive way of putting it on.

I am guessing I can flash the 30amp Turnigy plush with a USBasp right? Do you know of any video tutorials?
 
I have had a search and people are arguing as to whether or not its possible and even necessary to flash them. You have made a good point about my ESCs. I am considering putting my plushs on ebay and ordering some Afro 30 amp escs. I will wait and get it up and running before I make a decision.
 
Good news. I managed to get it up and running. Turned out it was my dodgy wiring and the fact I had left the bind plug in.

Thats good Sam well done mate , this is all part of learning RC mate , you can flash them your self and that software i gave you will update the kk board as well , there is a different firmware for the kk2.1 there is a video on u tube about it , simonk, rolf blake,lazy zero are always writing codes to make the board and esc work better , the kk2 board in its factroy setting is to high for a quad its set for the octicopter, so you need to turn down the P and I gains as the video for the kk2 set up but then add 10 or 20 to it for the kk2.1 board it will be spot on then , its like if you run the dead cat frame you need to change main settings to tell the board the motors have moved to a different angle
 
I know this be late but I have done this time and time again. I for get to make the calibration for the sensors in the board then it will arm.
 
I bought a KK2.1 cause it's the latest and greatest. Turnigy 1000kv motors, HK blue 30amp ESC orange 6ch receiver 10x4.5 props on a alumX aluminum frame using moongel pads for vibration using turnigy 2600 4s batteries. When I turned on quad. Thot to my self sweet. made all checks calibrations. armed it flew 2 mins then it just dropped and crashed. the board lites up nothing on screen. unplugged it try again it's fine but wont arm. I reflash it and screen menu is there with usb cable powering it but button 3 don't work. Flash went good and try it again screen lites up menu there arm it menu gone. now only with it hooked to PC I get the menu. Now I cant flash any more I get error something about fuses not set .I thinking bum board write.

HI mate on the kk 2.0 and kk2.1 you can only get into menu when its un-armed once armed the menu is disabled , at the moment just use one esc plug into m1 pins this will power kk now check settings load motor lay out for quad in x mode , if this works it may just be a power from esc failed , slowly re wire testing as you go , once you get to board calibration if any thing comes up fail then board is dead , get it replaced , hobby king are good as long as you show them its faulty a video put on u tube and send them the link will help speed things up

When USB cable to PC used menu there I can go threw menu to a point cause button 3 won't work. I gues it wasn't a good idea to buy of EBay then hold on to it for 3 months to build quad. I have 2 quads and three tricopters. I only used the KK2.0 and loved them. Stick avail at 165 on quad and 145 on tricopters are crazy fun. Then fly like a pro with auto level. My novice flying friends think I'm a expert lol. So I tryed my first KK2.1 and got a lemon. Dagnamit after less than one flight

Thank you for help. I order a another and will have to wait the 4 to 6 weeks I gues. Lmao
