New quad owner, new to this forum

Hello fellow pilots, Bill here, new to the club, new to Quads, 25 yrs flying fixed wing r/c. I bought a Syma 8XC ready to fly, great deal. I like it, A different sport than airplanes. I get about 7 minutes of varied throttle flying from a 2000 mah 1S. I fly mostly headless mode, and occasionally the standard mode. Is this the way to learn? Is this a crutch or a learning tool? Anxious to learn and share!
Thank you.

Bill

It flies with a 1s?

Never even tried headless mode.

Welcome to the forum. :)
Thanks for the reply, my error, I meant a 2S. I had 1S on the mind as I am awaiting arrival of a Flyzone Inum indoor micro light plane that in fact uses a 1s battery. I'm researching with little success what kind of charging plug-wire to get for the Flyzone and clones 1S batteries.

When you get it see if the connector looks like this one. Seems like it.

If so you could get this, just double check the polarity first.

Thanks MrJackson for your time and assistance. Do you guys think the prop protectors on the Syma X8C have any effect on the flight dynamics? Speed, power, agility? All out speed isn't my interest, I just like flying the thing cautiously and scale like.
Thank you for any input.

I, like you, was cautious when I started flying with my Syma X8C. Then when I did a flip, it must have torqued so much that the prop and guard met up with each other. Surprisingly, it tore up the guard and not the prop. After that, I took the guards off if I planned on anything fancy.

Thank you. I've done a few flips with mine with no noticeable interference between the props and guards but I can see it happening. What about this idea: tell me what you think: lightly heat the mounting points with a hair dryer and bend the guards DOWN a little to give a little more clearance. BTW I got two extra batteries on line, very reasonable but the connectors are very tight and I just don't feel like cutting and soldering so I got a pair of "C-Clip" pliers from Harbor Freight to separate them. Problem solved, no stress on the wires. I like the bird....a fun little beginner quad...can't beat the price.

It's not a bad idea but if you aren't having any problems, I wouldn't worry about it. Mine may have been a little flimsier than others. Quality control is probably poor at the manufacturer. I agree. It's a great beginner quad. I had a lot of fun with mine but just had no real power. I now have an XK X251 and have a blast with it. added a camera and I'm good. Have fun and enjoy your Syma for now. The bug will get you.

If their QC is anything like their instruction manual, wow, watch out! I have never read anything like it! I fly planes with a buddy, a retired neurologist (MD), a brilliant man and he couldn't make heads nor tails out of it. I thought perhaps I was suffering from repetitious senior moments (I am a senior) and a distinct depletion of cognitive skills....nope....it's just horribly translated into what guys in my club call "Chinglish". What is the XKX251? is it a mid level recreational or professional grade quad? BTW do you fly headless mode? I like it, a better learning tool than wrapping the little thing around a tree!
Thanks for your input.

I know your pain. I too am a senior and left handed to boot so many things seem kinda backwards to me. I know I could change to Mode 1 but that also makes forward go backward and vice versa and at least that part I get. The X251 is made by XK and I guess you would still call it a toy, an introductory racer or mid level but it has brushless motors and flies at about 47mph. No headless, no folllow me or return to home. Bare bones. I crash a lot. Ha!! I also have a Hubsan H501S and it has all the bells and whistles. I fly it a lot more. Had it 4 weeks, take it out most every weekend and haven't crashed yet. New record. And yes, I fly headless mode if it's there for me as I don't like buying and waiting for parts either.

Hey Bill, just my thoughts. If you do use headless mode be very aware of your transmitter orientation with you X8 during start up. Directly behind it and a line should run thru the center of your transmitter and the X8. DO NOT allow that thing to fly directly over your head, if you do weird things will happen afterwards. Headless mode is completely dependent on TX/RX orientation and that direct crossover is something it can't handle. Myself, even with losing depth perception, I don't use it. But eventually I'm gonna add a standalone FPV system.

I'm really liking mine and getting braver after a couple of drops that have shown me that this is actually a pretty tough bird. Another thing I like is that there are a ton of upgrades. Everything from very simple motor swaps(the "G" motors are worth changing to and is a pretty simple upgrade) to complete rebuilds with full on brushless motors and non-proprietary control systems.

Oh, and the losing depth perception....................trees are my main nemesis..........as seen here.............I do alright until I try to go around them.......

Headless mode is good to start with to learn the transmitter, how to hover and basic movements. After that, you should turn it off and never turn it on ever again. You will never learn to fly with it.

After you can fly it around without having to think about the controls any more, time to move up to something bigger and FPV. Something with different flight modes. The sooner you learn to fly with manual/rate mode, the faster you will progress.

Unless, of coarse, you don't see yourself signing up for races. Then stick with Horizon/Ratitude mode. All the fun of flips with a safety net. Some people just want to have fun after all. Your runcam/go-pro will last longer too.
