Starter kit for a newbie

HI mate i use proflight they are very good , it is a bind and fly so do you have a transmitter, that is first option what receiver spektrum or futaba , second option is how do you want it to fly advanced acro NO go for stable beginner , last is do you want it made or as a kit you build, your need go pro mount and if it uder mounted your want legs for the quad
its not bad frame is only £17, motors £50 esc £40 like i said i use them before they buy from hobby king and add money on the kk2.1 board is£9.50 and is a better board, what they are selling you for £25 will cost you £13 from hk so you can now see it would be cheaper to buy from hk get better parts for same money and build it , i will give you a hand in putting it together they are not hard to build take a morning thats all

Thank you for your reply. The more I read about this subject the more I get convinced that I would much prefer to build a quadcopter of my own (of course with lots of help). I believe the starting point is creating a list of components I will need.

1 transmitter
1 frame
4 motors
4 propellers
1 receiver
4 ESC
1 battery
wires...

I'm pretty sure I'm missing out a lot on my list. Help please?

The transmitter. Is there any particular feature/brand I should look out for? I don't mind the extra cost if there is something I WILL come to need when I gain experience that I will not use for the time being.

Thanks.

HI Joe , if it was me i would get a spektrum dx6i is a good starter if your going to fly helis and planes then dx6i /dx8/dx9 but cost goes up the dx6i has 6 channels so that will leave 2 channels not used but they can be put to use flight board kk2.1 is the new one get this from hobby king cheap on there , but there are many boards wii/ kk etc the kk 2 and kk2.1 will run a camera gimbal so the camera will stay level it also has a lcd screen so set up is easy and if you need to adjust it you dont need a pc , lots of guys use the dead cat or H frame as you dont always get the props in the camera angle the kk will run up to 8 motors , the esc you want are simonk flashed they are more stable watch this video it will show you how much better they are , where do you live if your near me i will always help you build it and set it up

HI mate i would go with the 2880433, good motors and props, dx6i is very useful so go for that one , now the hubsan that you now have got , get spare blades and see if you can get the rubber feet for it if not i will tell you a cheap way to sort it , they suffer from landing on a hard floor it knocks the motors so you need to protect them , you can use a small foam pad on the bottom of the feet or as i did pull motors up about 3mm then put a bit of black tape around motor so it cant slip back down this will stop motor bottom from hitting the floor

Hi, meeting the guy tomorrow to see the 2880433 :)

My Hubsan X4 arrived today and I've already lost could of the number of crashes I've had so far lol - especially since the transmitter is faulty and the seller is sending me a new one!! I hope that flying it with a GOOD transmitter is easier because if this is the norm, I'm glad I'm learning on this and not on anything bigger and more expensive!!!

Hi joe sorry to hear that there was a problem with it , when new transmitter comes make sure all trims are at centre, then switch on plug battery in on quad and put it down on a flat level surface, now give it 4 seconds for gyros to set up , and away you go , it should fly out of the box , just remember small movements on the sticks if you press right stick in the red led will start to flash this is now in expert mode then it will be hard to fly , so dont use till your used to it or if out side in wind , in this mode she can do flips and side flips

kk 2.1 is the new board self level is better on this board if your going to fly in self level mode , i dont as i do arco

Ah so kk 2.0 is not like it was "defective" or kk 2.1 is a "fix" for kk 2.0 .. its for a different use .. At the moment I am not thinking acro - more smooth flying and hoping the thing will get back in one piece :) So 2.0 is better for my use?

kk2.0 was the first with lcd the kk2.1 is the same board that was been tweeked to make self level work better + battery alarm and other add ons that were not on first board, no joe kk 2.1 is the better board it will be more stable in self level mode than kk2.0, i fly acro so that part on new board i would not use , if you dont have flight timer on the transmitter then the battery alarm will be good for you too i think it goes up in 1 milli volt at a time

Well done Joe , you started now , sit and think about what frame you want , may be a cheap frame to learn on and then when you want the real FPV change frame to a better one like a H frame or dead cat so no props in camera shot , if your buying bit at a time , you need to buy 4 motor at once and the same with esc go with simonk flashed ones , proflight are good for the flashed esc but get 4 at same time so they match, rest can be as you want Joe the frame i use was only £17 so i got 2 one for spares get one with built in pcb keeps wiring clean

Thanks!! As for frame I have already ordered this

My mistake was not ordering two like you said but........

Yes, one bit at a time .. motors will come in 4 if not 5 (one spare) but this is where I am confused. There's so much to choose from .. I want slow and steady flying .. no acro .. at least not for now. Also, long time flights preferable, not short 7 minute bursts :)

OK Joe nice frame you have comming , ok low kv motors are very a high torque, high kv high revs , now this is where you need to use ecalc i will put link on ( if you get strange results on ecalc then come off site and go in again ) now take a look at my mates set up on the fpv video he has that sort of frame and gets 19 mins flight time , if you go on hobby king they normally give you figs for different props on the motor your looking at so you can see how big a esc you need, http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=29482 these are the motors i have on mine very power full 380whatts each but not light so you have lots of home work to do Joe , just get some paper and write down the weight and power then you can add weight up so your know what over all weight is and e calc will give you flight time
http://www.ecalc.ch/xcoptercalc.htm?ecalc&lang=en

Love that eCalc lol - its going to be my nightmare for the next week lol - Thanks pal, will do my homework, not promising I'll get it right but I'll die trying lol

well looks like you got the samurai right mate lovely tool them , so your do ok with quad , i get 5 mins flight time but i only get 5/6 mins from my helicopters and i find my brain goes off after 6 mins

Ok, so to use that ecalc I need to know the total weight of the setup before I know which motors and props I need right? That should include future GoPro and FPV equipment correct?
