Things mounted above a quadcopter

If I want to mount a bulbous object on the top of the quad how would I calculate the amount of space I need to keep it flying?
Is there dead space on the centre top side between all the blades ?
Should I just assume the entire column directly above the quadcopter is "in use"?

That;s an interesting question that I've never heard before. Prop blades are forcing air downwards, therefore I don't think it would affect anything above the quad. Perhaps when you're very close to the ground some residual propwash may affect the actual object but not the flight characteristics of the quad. I've certainly never heard any discussion about batteries or cameras affecting a quad. But I may be off on my thinking as I don't know what this "bulbous object" is that you're referring to.
