If using a smartphone with an app for fpv does the smartphone have to have actual phone service connection to install and use the app?

Hi Doc you will need to download the app I have an old Iphone with no sim in it , so I just link to the internet at home to download the app and once thats done you dont need to be connected to anything other than the app and the unit on the quad

Fantastic! Thank you for the info. I was thinking about buying a cheap used I Phone just for this purpose. So as I understand I can download the app on my computer then install it on the I Phone? How do you move if from the computer to the I Phone?

No Doc connect the iPhone to your home internet and download direct to the phone ,if you going to use this for FPV it may be better to get an iPad as the screen is bigger
If you have broadband at home go in to the wifi on the iPhone or iPad and connect to the broadband modem this way then go to app store and download the app you need

OK, now I think I can understand. I can use the phone for going online without having a paid for phone service. Yes I believe I have broadband I connect wireless to a severeal laptops and a kindle fire just fine. I thought you had to have phone service . I am on old geezer and not too tech savey, but I am learning. LOL Thanks so much for the help and patience.

I don't think that's what Neil meant, nor do I think it's possible. You would download the app with your computer then transfer it to the IPhone.

about buying a cheap used I Phone
Even used they are quite expensive. Maybe a large screen android device would be better. They will directly connect to the internet and you will have a fully functioning device (sans phone service.) These are some of the inexpensive ones.

You would then go to the Play Store, register your device, and look for aps.

Doc you dont need a sim to go on line use the wi fi of your phone link to broadband as you do with the kindle , then download app , its a good idea not to have a sim in the phone if your using it for FPV as a phone call can over ride the FPV mode on some apps

What Jackson has linked you too, is also a good route to go
a few things to be careful about is what ever you use it must not be able to blue screen or cut off is the FPV signal get weak
and what is the range of the wi fi most are only 300 mtrs max
